Fishing,
both freshwater and saltwater angling. Species of fish that are
common in our area: Cutthroat, Dolly Varden, Steelhead, 5
species of salmon (Chinook, Silver, Pink, Sockeye and Chum),
Halibut and a variety of Cod, Snapper and Rock fish. Several
charter boats operate out of Petersburg or boat rentals are
available..
Sight
seeing on our waterfront which is very active during the fishing
season, whale or bird watching, hiking, kayaking, glacier tours.
Tour
Petersburg Museum which is rich in local history.
Little
Norway Festival is held annually to celebrate Norwegian
Independence Day, dates, the closest weekend to May 17th.
Activities include a pageant, style show (colorful Norwegian
dress), folk dancing, salmon bake and a variety of fun races,
events, and traditional foods and wares offered for sale on main
street in an open market..
Petersburg
Chamber of Commerce sponsors a King Salmon Derby for 4 days
Memorial Day weekend. There are many prizes offer and a
substantial grand prize of $10,000 for the tagged salmon.
The
flora, fauna and landscape of the Petersburg area is ideal for
the photography enthusiast. One mountain, Devil's Thumb, on the
mainland, overlooks nearby glaciers. It would be hard to go a
day without seeing several Bald Eagles.
